The interplay of immunity and antimicrobial defense with salt and oxygen tissue microenvironment
It is well established that the oxygen levels of certain layers of the skin and of cells in the gastrointestinal tract are low. Furthermore, inflamed tissues display very low oxygen levels as well. Interestingly, under high-salt diet sodium accumulates in the skin without commensurate water retention resulting in interstitial hypertonicity. The group explores the homeostatic role of the immune system in orchestrating the peripheral milieu (i.e. oxygen availability and interstitial tonicity) and studies how an altered milieu (i.e. hypoxia, interstitial hypertonicity) will regulate the immune response and defense against infectious pathogens via the respective transcription factors (i.e. hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) and tonicity-enhancer binding protein (TonEBP)). These studies may e.g. lead to new strategies to treat infectious diseases.
